Take-off to Malawi!

It is just a week until five local youngsters, members of the Shewsy Youth Club in Everton, fly to Mtunthama, Malawi to work alongside the charity Medic Malawi.

The girls – Jess, Bec, Ellie, Courtney and Chelsea – and youth worker Leslie Drew will spend 17 days at St Andrew’s hospital, feeding centre and orphanage.

The youngsters worked at weekends and after school to raise money to pay for their flights but, says trip coordinator Julie Fitzpatrick, they wanted to do more and sought help for the charity.

Spirit of Shankly was keen to help and, with Ms Fitzpatrick’s agreement, has filled a large bag (up to airline maximum weight of 23kg) of vital supplies, plus a cash donation, adding up to £500.

The bag, that will accompany the Shewsy group is stuffed with:

Sunglasses – vital for post-cataract operation welfare, cataract surgery is a common procedure here

Surgical gloves and face masks for operation

Terry-towelling nappies, plastic pants and 24 pins

Pens and pencils.

SOS and kids T-shirts, donated by Hat, Scarf and a Badge.

We’d like to wish the youngsters and Julie a great and rewarding experience, and above all a safe journey as they fly out on Wednesday 13 July.
