Support for the Shewsy Youth Club

A group of Liverpool youngsters needs our help. Five members of the Shewsy youth club – Jess, Bec, Ellie, Courtney and Chelsea – and a staff member are raising money for a trip to Africa, where they will work in an orphanage alongside the charity Medic Malawi.

The Shewsy youth club, based in Everton, was founded in 1903 by masters of Shrewsbury School. Links between the two remain strong, and pupils, youth-club members and staff are heading to Malawi in July. They will spend 17 days in Mtunthama working at St Andrew’s hospital, feeding centre and orphanage.

Malawi, a peaceful country, is one of the seven poorest in the world. Little rainfall this year has left many, many families hungry. St Andrew’s hospital has grown much from an empty field in 2001. It started with just an outpatients’ department and now includes a maternity facility, 60 in-patient beds, and a children’s ward.

This trip promises to be moving and incredibly rewarding for the Shewsy youngsters. Among countless amazing experiences, they will witness people’s reactions on having their sight restored after arriving there blinded with cataracts. They have worked tirelessly over the past months to fund this expedition, spending weekends bag packing, selling tickets and running a tuck shop to raise the money for their flights.

But they want to do more. The charity needs help and we want to give the youngsters the best chance they have to make a difference over there, so all money donated from now goes directly to Medic Malawi.

Medic Malawi is a special charity. Every penny they raise goes to Malawi – there are no UK administration costs or salaries. They encourage supporters and volunteers, especially teenagers, to get involved and experience meeting and working with the people in Mtunthama.

Anybody who would like to make a donation, get in touch at medicmalawi@gmail.com,  medicmalawi.org or donate through.justgiving.com/medicmalawi.

Other donations needed include bandages, dressings, sterile gloves, aspirin, paracetamol, cloth nappies, nappy pins, plastic nappy pants, wind-up torches, pens, pencils, footballs, frisbees, solar-powered calculators, baby clothes.
