Manchester United Pre-match Police Meeting

The Spirit of Shankly were represented today at a police pre-match meeting for the Liverpool v Manchester United fixture taking place this Sunday.

The meeting was called to discuss the policing arrangements mainly affecting Manchester United supporters at the ground but some issues discussed also had relevance to our own supporters.

While transport and potential holding back for United supporters were mentioned the main issues for Liverpool supporters to note were as follows:

1. Merseyside Police are emphasising that both sets of supporters will be monitored over offensive chanting particularly any referencing the respective disasters both Clubs have suffered.

2. LFC have upgraded their CCTV this season inside and around the ground and this makes it easier for them to identify anyone misbehaving

3. Manchester United supporters will be given guidance about leaving the ground and area of Anfield and Merseyside Police have asked that if LFC supporters do not need to be in the Anfield Road area after the match then they are respectfully asked to stay away

4. The Club and Police also again stressed that it is advisable to keep away from the Main Stand building work as much as possible

Finally Merseyside Police said their aim was to reduce policing at matches as far as possible as they became less high risk and they would endeavour to publish positive media stories after the match if it passes off without any significant incidents.

Merseyside Police have also accepted an invitation to a future Union general meeting for a question and answer session with union members about football policing.

As always any members who have any experiences (positive or negative) arising from next week’s fixture are asked to contact the Union via clubliaison@spiritofshankly.com
